Benfica were cruising to victory having found themselves 3-0 up thanks to a Pizzi hattrick, but a 15 minute fight back at the end of the game meant the match went from a foregone conclusion to a far from certain battle.

Benfica could have easily been up by more in the first half, having dominated possession and missed a penalty early on, but the margin of victory going into the break still made this contest very uneven from the off.

However, Guimarães instilled a never-say-die attitude, with summer signing Andre Andre involved in both the goals towards the end of the game.
