Guimarães 0-2 Tondela: Shock as Vitoria crash out of League Cup
Tondela caused something of a surprise in the qualification round of the Taça da Liga, knocking out big-spenders Vitoria Guimarães.
Tondela, who impressed the nation with their efforts last season, ran out 2-0 winners over Guimarães, who had, by contrast, an underwhelming campaign last year, with a goal in each half consigning Guimarães to defeat.
The first goal came from Cristian Arango in the 26th minute, with the second coming deep into the second half courtesy of Jhon Murillo.
Despite recruiting the likes of Andre Andre, Joao Teixeira and Rafa Soares this summer and putting in a solid performance, Guimarães were ultimately second best, an undoubted disappointment for a club who were hoping their success on the pitch would match their ambition in the transfer market.
However, while a loss to kick-start the season is far from what the Guimarães fans were hoping for, they can take comfort from witnessing an impressive performance in possession that ultimately lacked end product, and will be hoping for more in the league, which has to take priority.
