Six Portuguese players on shortlist to win Golden Boy award
Six Portuguese players have been included on the shortlist of 80 names for the prestigious Golden Boy Award after a stellar U19 European Championship saw Portugal crowned champions.
Benfica's João Filipe, also called Jota, who was the star of the U19 European Championship after finishing as joint top scorer with 5 goals, as well as bagging 2 assists, has been included on the list.
Additionally, fellow top scorer Francisco Trincão, Braga's exciting forward who has been linked with Juventus in recent days, is also on the list, despite not being selected for the tournament's official best XI.
There is also a spot on the 80-man shortlist for Wolves' exciting leftback Ruben Vinagre, who showed his attacking prowess throughout the U19 Championship and will likely get his fair share of game time for Wolves in the Premier League this season.
In addition to the trio of U19 talents, Manchester United's new signing Diogo Dalot also makes the cut, as does Sporting's 20-year old centreback João Queirós, and Porto striker Rui Pedro.
Manchester United's 17-year old Angel Gomes, who has Portuguese heritage after his father played for Portugal's U21 team, is also in the final 80.
