Porto earn respectable point in Germany after 1-1 draw against Schalke as Champions League gets underway
Schalke and Porto shared the points in the first round of Champions League fixtures as they drew 1-1 on the night.
It looked set to be a near-perfect start for Porto, who earned a penalty in the 10th minute courtesy of an inadvertent handball by Naldo. Alex Telles was the man who stepped up to take the spot-kick, but the Schalke keeper got down his the right-hand side to keep the ball out. An excellent opportunity that went begging for the Portuguese champions.
And Schalke were the side to have the best good chance, with Naldo heading just over from a corner 10 minutes later.
Having gone in level at half time, both sides were no doubt thinking they could win this, but it was the hosts that took the lead after McKennie played in Embolo, who slotted home with a delicate finish.
Porto looked like they were going to surrender all three points, a disappointing start to what is sure to be a complicated start to the Champions League campaign, but Naldo once again gave away a penalty, giving Otavio the chance to score from the spot, leveling the game.
With the game finishing 1-1, Porto can return to Portugal content with their endeavour, while in the other tie in the group Galatasaray thumped top seed Lokomotiv Moscow 3-0 in Turkey.
