Portuguese player named in Europa League team of the week
Despite a less than spectacular week for Portuguese football clubs, Portugal are still represented in the latest Europa League team of the week.
Porto, unsurprisingly, have no representatives in the team of the week, having suffered a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Feyenoord despite dominating the game.
Braga also have no players in the dream eleven after their 2-2 draw with Slovan Bratislava, though Galeno, after his delightful second-half goal, can consider himself somewhat unfortunate not to make the cut. Guimaraes are also unrepresented following a valiant 0-1 home loss against Eintracht Frankfurt.
However, despite a less than convincing 2-1 victory over LASK, in which they were second best throughout, Sporting are still represented in the team of the week, the only Portuguese side to have a player included in the side.
That honour goes to the man that scored Sporting’s winning goal just past the hour mark - Bruno Fernandes. Sporting’s captain and talisman was predictably Sporting’s key figure yet again, and his well-taken goal rescued what looked like an unlikely win.
Wolves were also in action yesterday, and secured an impressive 0-1 victory over Turkish strugglers Besiktas in Istanbul thanks to a 93rd minute winner by Willy Boly.
However, despite the exceptional victory, which puts Wolves back in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages of the European competition, Wolves don’t have any players included in the team of the week.
The full team: Plamen Iliev (Ludogorets); Bolingoli (Celtic), Rafael Forster (Ludogorets), N’dicka (Eintracht Frankfurt), Kieran Tierney (Arsenal); Elyonoussi (Celtic), Dani Quintana (Qarabag), Bruno Fernandes (Sporting); Martinelli (Arsenal), Malen (PSV), Sadiq (Partizan).
