Jose Mourinho joins Spurs, Bruno Fernandes expected to be close behind
Jose Mourinho’s move to Tottenham Hotspur has opened the door for Bruno Fernandes to follow him to the English Premier League.
Sporting star Fernandes was widely linked with a move to England throughout the summer window, the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham all expected to be interested in securing his signature.
However, no move transpired, with no club willing to pay the £70million asking price for the Portuguese international, and against expectations he remained with Sporting CP for the current campaign.
He has only continued to impress in the Portuguese Primeira Liga; while his Sporting side continue to struggle domestically, he himself keeps flourishing. With 5 goals and 5 assists to his name already in the league this season, Fernandes’ heroics have helped Sporting remain at least semi-competitive in the Liga title race.
A goalscoring midfield player is not easy to find, and in Fernandes, who is now beginning to translate his club form to the international scene, Tottenham could get their hands on the perfect player to fit that mould.
Mourinho has continually expressed his admiration for the Sporting midfielder, and had he still been at United in the summer, it would almost certainly have led to him signing for the Red Devils.
However, even when Mourinho wasn’t at Spurs, the London club were still showing a great deal of interest in signing the 25-year old 18-time Portugal international, and that probability has only been amplified now Spurs have a Portuguese manager at the helm.
Fernandes would also come as the perfect replacement for Christian Eriksen, who has been linked with a move abroad over the last few months.
