Benfica confirm they have received a 126 million euro offer from Atletico Madrid for João Felix
Benfica have released a statement regarding the sale of Felix to Atletico Madrid.
In their latest communication, Benfica have confirmed that an offer has been proposed by Atletico Madrid that exceeds the player’s release clause of 120 million euros.
The statement says “SL Benfica hereby announces… that Atletico Madrid have submitted a proposal for the acquisition of João Felix Sequeira for 126 million euros (one hundred and twenty six million euros), which is under consideration.”
“It is further informed that the value exceeds the release clause due to Atletico Madrid paying the financial cost proposed in instalments.”
However, while the deal will cost Atletico Madrid 126 million euros, it is understood that Benfica will not receive that much, and neither will the money be paid in instalments.
Instead, Benfica will receive the full fee of the release clause - €120M - in one lump sum.
So, Benfica would not receive 126 million euros; rather, Atletico Madrid will pay that €126M to a third party in instalments, and that third party will then pay Benfica 120M in one go, likely on 1st July.
Therefore, while it is said that this offer is currently being considered by the club, there is no room for further speculation - it is a done deal and beyond doubt that Felix will be an Atletico Madrid player for the new season.
