Official Primeira Liga Team of the Season
The team of the 2018-19 Primeira Liga campaign has been announced.
Following on from another fascinating season whereby Benfica ultimately came out on top and Porto came as a close runner-up, it comes as no surprise to see that those two sides dominate the selected team of the season.
Indeed, every player in the final squad represents one of the ‘Big Three’ in Portuguese football - meaning that Braga, despite another respectable season, have no players that were deemed worthy of making the overall team of the year.
While Braga have no representatives, Sporting CP have two, and, somewhat surprisingly, despite finishing as runners-up to Benfica, Porto actually have more players in the team of the season (5) than their title rivals, who only had four.
Here is the complete team of the year:
GK: Iker Casillas (FC Porto)
RB: Alex Telles (FC Porto)
CB: Eder Militao (FC Porto)
CB: Mathieu (Sporting CP)
LB: Alex Grimaldo (SL Benfica)
CM: Hector Herrera (FC Porto)
CM: Bruno Fernandes (Sporting CP)
RW: Moussa Marega (FC Porto)
CAM: Joao Felix (SL Benfica)
LW: Rafa Silva (SL Benfica)
ST: Haris Seferovic (SL Benfica)
The team does have some notable ommisions; while every player on the list is worthy of inclusion, it is interesting to note that Benfica centreback Ruben Dias, who played 32 of Benfica’s 34 league matches last campaign and generally performed to a very high standard all season, failed to be included in the side, with Mathieu making it instead.
Additionally, Benfica’s Pizzi misses out on the team, despite contributing an impressive 13 goals and 19 assists in the Primeira Liga and playing every single one of Benfica’s league matches last campaign.
