Benfica win the International Champions Cup
Benfica came out winners in the prestigious pre-season competition, finishing above all eleven of their opponents to win the International Champions Cup.
Their victory comes after Manchester United, who were the only team who could catch Benfica, only managed to beat AC Milan on penalties, meaning that they secured just 2 points instead of the 3 they needed to draw level with Benfica at the top of the table.
Benfica managed to win all three of their matches within normal time, the only side in the competition to do so, an achievement that some of the world heavyweights such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Juventus failed to replicate.
Benfica ultimately beat Guadalajara 3-0, Fiorentina 2-1, and AC Milan 1-0 to win the title and start the new campaign in style.
Last season’s winners of the competition were Tottenham Hotspurs, who have so far picked up 3 points across 2 games. Benfica will be hoping that they can follow in the footsteps of Tottenham in the Champions League too, after the London club surprised the world to reach the final of Europe’s most prestigious competition last season, where they lost 2-0 to Liverpool.
It proved third time lucky for Benfica, who finally managed to win the International Champions Cup on their third attempt.
