Ruben Amorim becomes Sporting manager
Sporting have completed a dramatic move for young Braga manager Ruben Amorim for a fee of 10 million euros, making him the third most expensive manager in history.
Amorim, who has only been in charge of Braga for a little over two months, is yet to lose a league game at the helm of the Minho outfit, Braga's only defeats this season coming in the Europa League vs Rangers, where he wasn't officially manager due to his lack of coaching licenses.
The 35-year old former Benfica player won 10 of his 11 league games in charge of Braga, including a historic 5 consecutive victories against Benfica, Sporting and Porto combined.
Additionally, despite only being at the club for 10 weeks, he presided over Braga’s Portuguese League Cup triumph as they beat Porto in dramatic fashion in the final.
It seemed like Amorim may well have a sensational time at Braga from the off due to the fact that, in his first match in charge, he led the club to their joint biggest ever victory, a 1-7 win over Belenenses, but even he couldn't have seen what he managed to achieve coming.
And Sporting are prepared to pay substantial money for the relatively unproven Portuguese manager, Amorim’s release clause set at €10million.
Sporting did still have a manager when news of Amorim’s imminent appointment was first revealed, with Silas still in the hotseat at the time. He was, however, according to A Bola, informed of the events occurring at the club, and departed immediately after Sporting’s 3-1 loss to Famalicao later the same day.
The move represents Sporting's third managerial appointment this season, further encapsulating the chaotic scenes currently presiding over the club.
This will also be Braga’s third managerial change of the season too after Ricardo Sá Pinto was surprisingly sacked as head coach just after Christmas. This time, though, the decision will be enforced.
