Portuguese manager abroad sees club docked points
End of the title race: Portuguese coach abroad sees club fall further short of the Greek title after hefty points dedution.
Abel Ferreira has seen his side deducted 7 points, ending their chances of reclaiming the league title they won last season.
Abel, currently manager of Greek side PAOK, had just beaten Pedro Martins’ Olympiakos 3-2 in the Greek Cup, but their celebrations were quickly quashed when news broke that they were to be punished with a points penalty due to breaching ownership rules.
Before the points deduction, PAOK were well short of league leader Olympiakos, sitting 2nd on 59 points, 7 points off the leaders past the halfway stage of the campaign.
Despite the deduction, PAOK do remain in 2nd in the league, but now 14 points off Olympiakos, PAOK would require something of a miracle to defend the crown they won last season.
This is Abel Ferreira’s first season with PAOK, having joined in the summer from SC Braga.
PAOK weren’t the only side to suffer a points deduction: Xanthi also saw their points tally take a hit, deducted a significant 12 points, seeing them drop from 8th to 12th in the standings.
