Florentino Luis has new interest from England as Milan remain keen
Florentino Luis remains out of the picture at Benfica - to the dismay of many Benfica fans - and interest in his services continues to dominate the transfer news in Portugal.
His lack of game time with Benfica has been one of the mysterious aspects of Portuguese football over the last few months, particularly having witnessed the struggles which Benfica have endured in that time, with just one win in their last 10 competitive games.
After a stellar 2018-19 campaign with the club, Florentino’s place in the Benfica XI looked assured, and the expectation was that, though he would be on the move in the not too distant future, he would forge an integral part of Benfica’s plans until then. That, however, simply hasn’t been the case for the 20-year old midfielder.
The transfer of Julian Weigl to the club, added to the form of both Taarabt and Gabriel, meant his place in the team was far from comfortable and his game time was diminished, with significant competition for a starting berth.
Having played just 7 league games this season, his last coming all the way back in November 2019, his days at Benfica look numbered despite his excellent displays in defensive midfield last campaign, and plenty of clubs look to capitalise.
AC Milan remain the frontrunners to secure his signatured this summer, though plenty of English clubs have also expressed an interest in signing the Portuguese youth international, including none other than the two Manchester clubs.
There is, however, another English club looking to enter the race for one of the most talented young Portuguese players in the game - Newcastle United. Should their massive takeover be completed, Florentino is one of the first players that they will be turning to, according to press in England.
