Ten Gil Vicente players test positive for Covid-19, Primeira Liga match versus Sporting in serious doubt
The Portuguese Primeira Liga is set to kick off on the 18th September, with Sporting set to host Gil Vicente the following day - but Covid-19 has put the fixture in major doubt.
It comes after no fewer than 15 Gil Vicente individuals tested positive for the virus, with one player and three staff members first found to have caught the virus on the 11th September, causing their pre-season meeting with Vitoria Guimaraes to be cancelled.
After those 4 cases were identified, further tests then showed that another 9 players were infected with the virus, as well as another member of the backroom staff, ensuring that their match with Sporting CP is in serious doubt.
Sporting’s pre-season fixture with Napoli on the 13th September, which was set to be their final pre-season match before the start of the season, was also called off late in the day after three Sporting players tested positive for the virus.
