Sporting CP suffer narrow defeat to Borussia Dortmund in major blow to their hopes of advancing in the Champions League
Sporting CP put in a much improved performance in the Champions League following their 1-5 hammering against Ajax on the opening day, but still suffered defeat in Germany, losing 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund to all but end their hopes of making it to the Champions League round of 16.
Ruben Amorim’s side did manage to cause Dortmund one or two scares, but Dortmund were the side to break the deadlock through a well-taken Malen effort, and Sporting never managed to respond.
If anything, Dortmund could have even extended their lead further, but in the end had to settle for a 1-0 victory.
Sporting are yet to get off the mark in the group alongside Besiktas, both of whom sit 6 points behind the two group leaders Ajax and Dortmund. Sporting will face the Turkish side in a crucial double header over the coming month which will likely determine who qualifies for the Europa League.
