Porto buy replacement for Iker Casillas as Moreirense star defender moves abroad
Porto have confirmed the signing of their new goalkeeper, who is set to serve as the replacement of Iker Casillas.
Former Spain international Casillas is currently operating in Porto’s backroom staff, serving as the intermediate between the players and those higher up in the club’s hierarchy.
It comes after Casillas suffered a heart attack close to the end of last season; while me made a full recovery, his future in the sport was still very much in doubt.
Porto have therefore been linked with a range of goalkeeper’s this season, and were one of the leading candidates to complete the signing of Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon earlier this month before he made his return to Juventus.
Instead, Porto have completed the signing of 31-year old Agustin Marchesin from Club America, who has represented Argentina four times in his career.
Marchesin has an impressive trophy cabinet, having won the South American Cup with Lanus in 2013, the Liga MX Clausura with Santos Laguna in 2015, and both the Liga MX Apertura and Copa MX Clausura with Club America in 2018 and 2019 respectively.
He was also part of the Argentina squad that finished 3rd place at the Copa America earlier this summer.
Meanwhile, Ivanildo Fernandes, who was on loan from Sporting at Moreirense last season, has completed a move to Turkey, joining Trabzonspor on loan for the upcoming campaign.
He was highly impressive during his time at Moreirense, featuring in 32 of their 34 Primeira Liga matches last season, his dominance in defence playing a critical role in leading his side to an impressive 6th place finish.
