Deadline Day: Vitoria Guimaraes sign English winger and European Under-19 champion Marcus Edwards
Vitoria Guimaraes have completed the signing of exciting English youngster Marcus Edwards from Tottenham Hotspur.
Edwards, 20, was part of the England squad that won the U19 Euros two years ago, playing in four of England’s five matches en route to lifting the trophy, making a six-minute cameo appearance in the final against Portugal.
Despite Edwards showing promise at youth level, he joins Guimaraes on what is essentially a free transfer. However, Tottenham have retained 50% of his economic rights, meaning that half of any future sale fee will go directly to Spurs.
Edwards, who plays predominantly as a right winger, spent last season out on loan at Dutch outfit Excelsior, playing 25 Eredivisie matches, scoring twice and assisting four times in the process.
Before that, Edwards also made a senior appearance for Tottenham, featuring in the club’s EFL Cup clash with Gillingham in 2016 for the final quarter of an hour.
In the 2017-18 season, Edwards impressed for the Tottenham youth team, scoring 4 and assisting 3 in 6 outings for Spurs in the UEFA Youth League, captaining the side in each of those outings.
