Former Benfica winger Zivkovic with proposals on the table and future set to be decided
After terminating his contract with SL Benfica, Andrija Zivkovic is of significant interest, and should sign for his new club in the coming days.
After spending four seasons at Benfica, in which he featured in a total of 88 matches, the Serbian fell out of favour at the club despite showing good promise towards the start of his time in the country, and only featured for the Lisbon club on four occasions last season, playing just over 120 minutes in total.
This lack of game time was also due to some injury issues though, and the 24-year old winger likely would have played more frequently for the Eagles had he been available.
Nevertheless, Benfica were keen to get Zivkovic off their wage bill, and managed to come to an agreement that saw him leave for free.
And his next club is getting closer to being confirmed; though there is a battle ongoing for his signature, it is suggested that Greek outfit PAOK, managed by Portugal’s Abel Ferreira, are the most likely to sign him, with Serbian reports suggesting that most details have been agreed and he is virtually just a medical away from completing a move.
Nevertheless, other clubs have also expressed interest in the diminutive winger, and it has previously been thought that Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli are the most likely destination for him, a transfer that still remains highly plausible. However, Zivkovic is likely to prefer to remain in Europe, which gives PAOK an advantage. Lazio have also been touted as a potential destination, though have not acted on their interest.
Zivkovic has previously been a target of Greek side Olympiakos, also managed by a Portuguese in Pedro Martins, but it could be their title rivals that sign him instead.
Should he sign for PAOK, Zivkovic’s first match for the club may actually be against Benfica, with PAOK set to play the Lisbon club in a Champions League qualifier in mid-September.
