Replacement for the injured Gonçalo Guedes called up to Portugal squad
After Valencia's Gonçalo Guedes suffered an injury in their clash with Barcelona this weekend, a replacement for the Seleção squad has had to be called up.
The man that Fernando Santos has chosen to take the place of the former Benfica winger is current Benfica man Rafa Silva, who was a member of Portugal's Euro 2016 side and has been in good form for the Lisbon club so far this season.
Other players that could have been considered by Fernando Santos are veteran wingers Nani and Ricardo Quaresma, both of whom were also in Portugal's triumphant Euro 2016 squad, while Gelson Martins was another contender to be brought back into the side, but with game time in short supply since joining Atletico Madrid this summer, Gelson being overlooked isn't a great surprise.
Ivan Cavaleiro may have also had an outside chance of getting the call up, although having just returned to action after suffering an injury of his own, game time has also been in short supply for this twice-capped international.
Ricardo Pereira, who has been used as a right-sided winger frequently this season for Leicester City, is another player that could have been considered by Fernando Santos, although with Pereira typically utilised as a right back for both Portugal and Porto beforehand, Santos may not be prepared to play Pereira in the more attacking role.
Other attacking absentees from the Portugal squad that would typically be in with a shout of getting a call-up are Rony Lopes and Cristiano Ronaldo.
