Dramatic twist in Jonas saga as the Benfica striker confirms he is set to stay
It was a story that dominated the Portuguese papers for days; Benfica's star striker, Jonas, was on his way to Saudi Arabia in a big-money move. Or so it seemed.
It seems safe to say that virtually everyone in the country was expecting to be saying goodbye to Jonas this summer transfer window, widely reported in every major Portuguese news outlet that he was set to follow in the path of his former manager, Jorge Jesus, and head to the Middle East.
TugaScout also ran the story, with agreements in place and Jonas seeming to be confirmed as Benfica's latest high-profile name to be leaving the Luz.
Benfica themselves may have even believed their veteran Brazilian was on his way out, with Jonas omitted from their Champions League squad for their clash against Fenerbahce.
However, with his life settled in Lisbon and his wife pregnant, the 34-year old forward, who scored an incredible 99 goals in 110 league appearances across just four seasons, has decided against the move that would ultimately uproot his settled family and his heart remains with Benfica, confirming his decision to stay on Benfica TV.
He went on to say that it was his desire and intention to finish his career at Benfica, a club he has undoubtedly grown a very strong fondness for.
Fans across the world will be delighted with the decision, with the Brazilian a major factor in helping Benfica lift their last three Primeira Liga titles.
