Benfica through to the Champions League play-off after draw in Turkey - and already know their next opponent
Benfica may have only drawn 1-1 on the night in Istanbul as they took on Fenerbahce in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier, but it was more than sufficient to see them advance into the next round thanks to their slim 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture last week.
It meant Benfica's hopes of advancing to a ninth consecutive Champions League group stage are still well and truly alive, and they are now just one two-legged fixture away from achieving that impressive feat.
In fact, Benfica already know who they will need to overcome if they are to make it to the Champions League proper, with all the other second leg matches also occurring today.
Having been drawn with the winner of Spartak Moscow's clash with PAOK before the ties even kicked off, Benfica were likely unsure of who they would have to face in the play-off round, with the winner very difficult to predict. This was only further confirmed after PAOK only just edged out a 3-2 home victory over Spartak Moscow in the first leg after coming from 2-0 down to win the match.
However, after a 0-0 draw in the second, PAOK were able to see out their slim advantage from the first leg, meaning that the Greek outfit will serve as Benfica's final test as they bid to make the group stage.
The first leg match against PAOK will occur on 21st August, with Benfica serving as hosts in the opening match before travelling to Thessaloniki the following week.
