Portugal national team donate half of Euro 2020 prize money
At a time where the footballing world needs to come together, the current crop of stars of the Portugal national team, in addition to manager Fernando Santos and the coaching staff, have decided to donate half of their Euro 2020 qualifying prize money.
In total, 36 players participated in Portugal’s Euro 2020 qualifying campaign and were therefore entitled to the prize money on offer. All of them have agreed to give up half of their winnings.
The money raised is due to help support, and maintain the very survival of, non-professional football clubs and players in Portugal, who have seen their football season terminated prematurely as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.
A Bola report that the overall money raised through this donation by the Selecao amounts to more than one million euros.
In a post on social media, Bernardo Silva said that the idea of donating half the prize money was brought about by team captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is always ready to help. It was his idea to donate money to help non-profesional clubs. The players of the Portugal national team will give half the prize money for qualifying for Euro 2020 and he was the one who came up with this plan.”
