Wolves considering João Palhinha
João Palhinha’s place in the plans of Sporting manager Ruben Amorim are not guaranteed for the upcoming season - and Wolves are interested in capitalising.
It is understood that Sporting are hoping to secure 15 million euros for his services this summer, and Wolves are already one of the clubs Sporting have turned to in negotiations.
Palhinha, 24, has been on loan at Braga for two seasons now, and has been an integral part of the squad, particularly this campaign. Despite failing to ever make a strong impact at Sporting, who have been his parent club since 2016, Palhinha has made a real name for himself as a highly competent defensive-minded central midfielder while at Braga.
He played all 180 minutes against Wolves this season in the Europa League group stage for Braga, and was particularly impressive in Braga’s 0-1 win over Wolves at Molineux in their first meeting, with his composure in and out of possession and his defensive discipline to shield the backline both major contributing factors in Braga managing to see out an impressive 1-0 victory.
A physical presence, Palhinha has proven himself to be accomplished in aeriel duels, which has proved a useful asset both for goalscoring and in defence. Capable of playing centreback as well as in central and defensive midfield, Palhinha is a defensively intelligent footballer, with his positioning, awareness and tackling prowess ensuring he offers strong protection in front of his goalkeeper.
Palhinha is more than a defensive footballer, though, and offers good control in the middle of the park, possessing a very strong passing game that ensures he helps his side maintain control of the game. Additionally, he has shown a willingness to push forward when the opportunity presents itself, and isn’t afraid of taking on a long shot.
However, despite his clear ability, new Sporting manager Ruben Amorim does not plan to rely on him in the future. This is somewhat surprising, as Palhinha was an integral part of Ruben Amorim’s side during his brief stint in charge of Braga this season. He played the full 90 minutes under Amorim in the 1-0 Portuguese League Cup final victory over Porto, for example, as well as the full 90 in Braga’s exceptional 1-7 win over Belenenses.
However, Amorim is expected to turn to 20-year old Daniel Braganca next season instead, who has had a tremendous campaign while out on loan at Estoril this season.
It means that Wolves could be the beneficiaries this summer, if they are willing to come close to the 15 million euro asking price. And Portuguese reports believe that negotiations are already underway.
