Bruno Fernandes has now scored 18 consecutive penalties - who was the last goalkeeper to stop him?
Bruno Fernandes has now gone 18 penalties without missing from the spot as he continues to cement his place as one of the best penalty-takers in the world.
Seven of the penalties have already been scored while on the books of Manchester United. The other 11 came during his time at Sporting.
His run has seen him score against the likes of Hugo Lloris, Kasper Schmeichel and Pepe Reina, with his latest coming against Copenhagen’s Karl-Johan Johnsson to break the deadlock in their Europa League quarter final clash.
He has, however, failed to convert from the spot previously, as difficult as it may be to believe. You have to go all the way back to the 21st October 2018, not far off two years ago now.
The goalkeeper that defied the odds to stop Bruno Fernandes was Miguel Soares of lowly SC Loures. In his typical hop-and-shoot fashion, Bruno Fernandes’ approach was notably similar to the style he elects today. But, his strike proved to be of the perfect height for the ‘keeper, who went to his right with purpose to push the ball out.
Sporting did go on to win the game 2-1 as they advanced to the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup. They went on to win the competition in May 2019, beating FC Porto 7-6 on penalties. Bruno Fernandes, of course, scored one of the spot-kicks for Sporting.
That penalty versus Loures is the only one in four years that Fernandes has failed to convert. Before that, you have to go back over four years ago to April 2016 to find another one that Fernandes has missed; it came while he was playing for Udinese.
Those are the only two penalties Bruno Fernandes has ever missed in his professional career, while he has scored an incredible 27.
