Everton Cebolinha handed astronomical release clause
Everton Cebolinha is Benfica’s new number 7 after arriving from Gremio for a fee of approximately 20 million euros.
The 24-year old is incredibly highly rated, and was closely linked with Manchester City last year, who reportedly bid as much as 50 million euros for the Brazilian international.
That move failed to materialise though, and Benfica have benefitted, signing Everton for a heavily reduced fee on a contract valid until 2025.
Having already played for Brazil 14 times, finishing as top scorer in Brazil’s triumphant Copa America tournament in 2019, and having played 180 games for Gremio, scoring 47 and assisting 17, there is a sense that Benfica have a gem on their hands - and he’s been given a release clause to match.
Indeed, Benfica have managed to secure a release clause of 150 million euros in Cebolinha’s contract, fully protecting their player and financial interest from any external interest.
Gremio maintain the rights to 20% of any future sale.
