Benfica were offered the chance to sign Dani Alves - but turned it down
Benfica were presented with the opportunity to sign Brazil and Barcelona legend Dani Alves this window according to TVI24 - but Jorge Jesus favoured the signing of Gilberto.
Dani Alves’ age was considered to be a defining factor in Benfica opting against bringing in the 118-time Brazilian international, with the now 37-year old currently on the books of Brazilian side Sao Paulo.
Having amassed over 750 professional career appearances at the likes of Barcelona, PSG, Juventus and Sevilla, many clubs would jump at the chance of signing a player of his stature - but Benfica manager Jorge Jesus felt that 27-year old Gilberto from Fluminense would be a better acquisition, and he has since been added to the books at Benfica, signing until 2025.
Though Benfica turned down the chance to sign Alves, it is testament to the job that Jorge Jesus did while in South America with Flamengo that so many South American footballers are now keen to make the move to Benfica.
Benfica are set to complete the signing of fellow South American star Edinson Cavani on a free transfer, after the Uruguayan and PSG legend’s contract with the French champions came to an end.
