FC Porto will be in pot 1 for the Champions League group stage draw
Porto will officially be in pot 1 for next season's UEFA Champions League following Lyon's elimination from the competition.
Six of the eight Champions League group stage pot one places are reserved for the champions of the six best European leagues in accordance to the UEFA Coefficient. For this year, these are the Spanish La Liga, English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, French Ligue 1, and Russian Premier League.
As a result, all of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSG and Zenit St. Petersburg have been guaranteed a spot in pot 1 for the 2020-21 Champions League group stage draw.
The other two pot 1 berths are then reserved for this season's champions of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
However, because the winner of the Champions League will be one of Bayern Munich or PSG, who have both already guaranteed a pot 1 placement, the pot 1 place instead drops to the champion of the 7th best association - which is Porto and Portugal.
Therefore, Porto are assured of a pot 1 place for the group stage, which ensures that they should avoid being drawn against the best clubs in the competition.
It is the first time in 22 years that the Champions League final will be contested by two sides that both won their respective domestic leagues.
Sevilla or Inter Milan will be the final pot 1 team depending on who wins the Europa League.
