Boavista chase former Benfica defender Garay

Boavista chase former Benfica defender Garay

Boavista continue their bid to strengthen their squad for the new campaign as they look to bring in centreback Ezequiel Garay.

Garay, who represented Benfica for three years from 2011 to 2014 before moving to Russian giants Zenit Saint Petersburg, would represent another major signing for Boavista, who have already completed the signing of reigning World Cup champion Adil Rami and former Benfica and Manchester City midfielder Javi Garcia on free transfers, as well as the loan signings of Angel Gomes, Jorge Benguche, Nuno Santos and Alejandro Gomez. There is also excitement over the permanent signing of US international Reggie Cannon.

33-year old Garay would therefore only be another impressive piece of the puzzle for Boavista, who have ambitions to return to European football next season and make a push to become the fourth biggest club in the country again.

The 32-time Argentina international most recently played for Valencia, but is currently without a club after his contract with the Spanish side expired.

He played 23 matches for Valencia last season across all competitions, including 5 in the UEFA Champions League.

Garay has won both the Portuguese and Russian league titles, lifted the Copa del Rey in 2019, and finished runners-up in the Europa League in both 2013 and 2014
