Sporting CP: Champions of Portugal!
Against the odds and with two games to spare, Sporting CP have sealed their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years after a 1-0 victory over Boavista.
Sporting knew they needed just two points from their final three games to lift the biggest prize in Portuguese football, and nerves were settled just after the half hour mark after Paulinho powered home from close range to put Sporting in pole position, and they were in full control from then on.
It is an extraordinary achievement from a side that were given less than a 5% chance of winning the trophy at the start of the season, but with the composed and strategic Ruben Amorim at the helm deploying his 3-4-3 system and bringing the best out of his impressively unified squad, Sporting went from strength to strength.
Sporting’s title credentials grew from the improbable to the impressive in no small part due to their incredible knack for scoring late goals. On numerous occasions Sporting snatched all three points deep into the second half, which has been the foundation towards getting their hands on a trophy that had evaded them for nearly two decades.
Celebrations in Lisbon will go on long into the night as the green side of the capital are finally on top of the nation, boasting all the bragging rights over their previously noisy neighbours.
