David Tavares signs new five year contract with Benfica

Twenty year old David Tavares has signed a new contract with SL Benfica.

The midfielder has signed until 2024, and has been given a significantly higher release clause, set at 66 million euros.

Although he is yet to make his senior debut for Benfica, big things are expected of the Portugal U19 international, and he has been impressing Champions League winners Liverpool.

Klopp’s admiration for the youngster came after Liverpool played Benfica B in preparation for the Champions League final in May, Benfica B playing their own special role in helping Liverpool to ultimate European glory.

Tavares was one of the players that Klopp felt stood out from the rest in that practice fixture, his physicality, movement and technical ability impressing the German coach.

Big things have been expected from the attacking midfielder, and he will be integrated into the senior team for next season.

He was supposed to form part of Benfica’s senior team at the start of last season, but a serious ACL injury kept him out for the majority of last campaign.

Now though, he has fully recovered, and is currently with the senior side for pre-season.

In total, he played 8 matches for Benfica B last campaign.
