Benfica's João Filipe available on loan this summer
Benfica’s young talent João Filipe is one of the players that Benfica are open to letting go for the upcoming season, with game time with the Eagles set to be in short supply as their summer of investment continues.
Filipe, also known as Jota, experienced something of a frustrating season with Benfica, in which he was afforded just 6 starts all season across all competitions. He was, however, regularly used as a sub in the closing stages of matches, meaning that he averaged just 21 minute showings per outing as he featured in a total of 28 games this campaign.
Now 21, the former Portugal U19 international star needs to start picking up some regular game time if he is to live up to the lofty expectations that have been on him ever since he burst onto the scene in the Benfica academy.
Once rated as the biggest prospect Benfica have in their ranks, ahead of the now world-renowned Joao Felix who completed an astronomical 120 million euro move to Atletico Madrid last summer, there is a risk that Filipe will fail to come close to reaching his potential, particularly with the potential competition for places he could have to start for Benfica this season, with the likes of attacking playes Cebolinha, Cavani and Waldschmidt set to arrive at the club.
Nottingham Forest are one club that have previously shown interest in the Portuguese U21 international, although where he could end up remains to be seen. There is a strong possibility that he could remain in Portugal.
Filipe infamously scored 5 goals in the U19 European Championship 2018 to finish top scorer alongside Francisco Trincao as the attacking duo led Portugal to glory, beating Italy 4-3 in the final.
