Newcastle United latest Premier League club to show interest in Porto's Moussa Marega
Newcastle United are the side currently leading the chase in signing FC Porto’s starting striker Moussa Marega.
The Malian international is now entering into his final year of contract, and with no contract renewal in sight, Porto are willing to cash in on the 29-year old before he leaves for nothing.
Porto are believed to be hoping to get around 20 million euros for his services - though because his contract expires in the summer of 2021, clubs are looking to capitalise and secure his signature for a lower fee.
Newcastle United are one such side, looking to buy the 24-time Mali international for a fee of around 15 million euros, but Porto are, as yet, unwilling to budge from their asking price.
Fellow Premier League club West Ham United have been long-term admirers of Marega, and are also likely to enter the race to sign the dominant forward. They previously came close to securing his signature back in the summer of 2018, though the move failed to materialise.
Marega has previously made no secret of the fact that he would like to ply his trade in the Premier League and, now 29, may see this as the perfect time to finally make the move.
Marega had a solid 2019-20 season for Porto, scoring 12 goals in 29 league appearances, and 15 across all competitions. It fell short of his quality seasons prior to that though, with perhaps his best campaign coming in 2018-19, when he scored 21 goals and assisted 11 in 47 games. What made it particularly spectacular was that 6 of those goals came in the UEFA Champions League as he led his side to the quarter finals of the most prestigious club competition in Europe.
Overall, Marega has 60 goals in 145 matches for FC Porto, having also had very successful loan spells at both Maritimo and Vitoria Guimaraes.
