Benfica reconsidering 45 million euro offer made for Tottenham target Carlos Vinicius
Benfica are reconsidering the proposal of 45 million euros tabled by an undisclosed English Premier League club for the services of Brazilian striker Carlos Vinicius.
Despite having previously turned down the offer, which fell considerably below the asking price of club president Luis Filipe Vieira, there is the feeling that Benfica will struggle to bring in any more for the 25-year old forward.
Superagent Jorge Mendes, who is central to negotiations that would see Vinicius depart, in particular is said to believe that Benfica will be unable to get close to the 60 million euros they are demanding due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused Vieira to reconsider the 45 million euro bid that has already been made.
Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be one of the clubs showing the most interest in signing Carlos Vinicius, with Jose Mourinho desperate to add another striker to Spurs’ squad to provide more competition and cover for star man Harry Kane.
Mourinho recently said “I want, I need a striker”, and that he “honestly believes” that they are going to get one, while Benfica are actively willing to sell Vinicius having significantly invested in the squad this summer with several new signings.
According to TVI24, three English Premier League clubs have already made enquiries for the services of Vinicius - with one unnamed side even making an official bid of 45 million euros.
Though the club making an official approach is unknown, Tottenham Hotspur have for a long time been widely seen as a very possible destination for Vinicius, with Mourinho in particular a major factor, and the London club have recently stepped up their interest in the Brazilian striker.
However, Spurs, who lost their opening Premier League match to Everton, are expected to have plenty of players on their shortlist as their search for a new striker intensifies.
Carlos Vinicius had a stunning debut season in Portugal, finishing as Primeira Liga top scorer with 18 goals and 5 assists in 32 games, averaging a goal or assist every 78 minutes.
No potential transfer for Vinicius is expected to go through before Benfica face PAOK on Tuesday in a Champions League qualifier, with Vinicius inculded in the 25-man squad.
