Braga lift League Cup title after dramatic last-minute winner
Braga have won the Portuguese League Cup after an entertaining 1-0 victory over FC Porto at the Estadio Municipal.
Braga, who beat Sporting in the previous round, won the trophy for the second time in the club’s history, their only other League Cup triumph coming in 2013.
Both Porto and Braga had significant chances to take the lead in the match, Braga striking the crossbar twice, Ricardo Horta’s early dipping shot from the edge of the box the first big warning to Porto in the match, while they also hit the bar in the closing stages of the match.
Ricardo Horta also had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 12th minute, but for Alex Telles’ impressive close-range block.
Porto, meanwhile, inconceivably missed a golden opportunity to take thed lead themselves in the 37th minute, Jesus Corona almost walking the ball across the line, but the Brazilian couldn’t beat Matheus on the goal-line, while Tiquinho Soares then struck the crossbar from inside the six-yard box.
Braga, however, were the side that managed to seal victory, a dramatic last-gasp 95th minute winner from Ricardo Horta on the turn confirming victory for the Minho club.
For Porto, though, it sees them lose their fourth League Cup final in history, and they are still yet to win the domestic cup competition.
