Jose Gomes leaves Maritimo, moves to Spanish second division
Maritimo manager Jose Gomes has decided to leave the club as he embarks on a new challenge across the border.
Gomes, who guided Maritimo to safety and an impressive 11th place finish, has decided to depart the club after under a year in charge to join Almeria.
He did a solid job at the Madeiran club, achieving the set objective of maintaining the club’s top flight status, winning 7 of his 24 matches in charge.
Of a possible 69 points, he earned 28 while at the helm, averaging 1.22 points per game in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
The former Reading manage now joins Almeria at a pivotal point in their season, set to oversee the Spanish emblems play-off fixtures as they look to earn promotion to the Spanish top flight.
Gomes will therefore be thrown into the action immediately in Spain as Almeria, who finished 4th in the Spanish second division, are set to take on Girona in the play-off semi-finals as they look to gain access to the Spanish top flight.
