22:35 - 23rd June - PORTUGAL ARE THROUGH TO THE ROUND OF 16!
A draw versus France sees Portugal ease into the round of 16 as the very best 3rd place team in the entire competition! And that’s while being in a group with both Germany and France. An impressive achievement. Portugal will now face Belgium in four days’ time.
19:05 - FT: Spain 5-0 Slovakia; Sweden 3-2 Poland

Current results very much indicate that Belgium will be Portugal's opponents if they finish 3rd - but Portugal know that even a loss by a three goal margin will see them go through - as long as Hungary don't beat Germany.
18:03 - TABLE AT HALF TIME
As it stands with Spain 2-0 up versus Slovakia and Poland 1-0 down to Sweden, Porugal will go through in 3rd place even if they lose by 3 goals versus France (and Hungary don't beat Germany). Belgium would be Portugal's opponents though.

We’re underway. 0-0 between Spain and Slovakia and between Poland and Sweden would leave the 3rd place rankings looking like this:

So, it’s the final day of the group stage and Portugal take on France in a fascinating replay of the Euro 2016 final. Before that though, we have Spain vs Slovakia and Sweden vs Poland, two matches that will determine who out of Belgium and the Netherlands Portugal will face in the round of 16 if they qualify in 3rd position in Group F. Should that prove to be the case, above shows who Portugal would play with each combination of results in Group E: (Essentially, a Spain draw or a Poland win would mean Portugal would face the Netherlands. Otherwise it’s likely Belgium).

And that goal takes Croatia up to 2nd in their group, above Czech Republic! The Czechs still qualify, but only in 3rd as it stands.

Could be a significant goal for Portugal! Croatia, as it stands, in 3rd in the group with just 2 points on the board. As such, as this point in time, even if Portugal lost by THREE goals against France, they would still be guaranteed to progress to the round of 16 (as long as Hungary don’t beat Germany).
20:32 - 22nd June 2021 - As it stands, who could Portugal play in the round of 16?
It’s beginning to become clear as to who Portugal will play if they are able to qualify for the next round of this competition - and they can still do so in 1st, 2nd and 3rd position in the group stage. Here is who Portugal would play, as it stands, in the round of 16 if they qualify in each of those positions:
Portugal finish 1st - Play versus Switzerland
Portugal finish 2nd - Play versus England
Portugal finish 3rd - Play versus Belgium or The Netherlands (Belgium perhaps slightly more likely).

Croatia lead against Scotland. As it stands, the 2018 World Cup finalists are going through in 3rd position. Not ideal for Portugal though.

Here we go, we’re underway on the penultimate day of the group stage! A draw today would be the most advantageous result for Portugal. Here’s the ranking table of the 3rd place teams with the score currently 0-0:
18:17 - 22nd June 2021 - A draw between Croatia and Scotland means Netherlands await 3rd place in Portugal's group
As it stands, Portugal could face either of Belgium or the Netherlands in the round of 16 should they finish 3rd in group F - but a draw between Scotland and Croatia this evening would confirm that the Netherlands would be the opponents - and if Portugal were to win that one, Denmark or Wales would be waiting in the quarterfinal.
12:05 - 22nd June 2021 - Attention turns to Group D
A new dawn, a new day, and focus now heads over to Croatia vs Scotland. In this one, the best case scenario for Portugal is perhaps also the most unlikely. If Croatia-Scotland were to end in a draw - subsequently knocking both sides out - then Portugal will have the safety blanket of knowing that they can actually lose by as many 3 goals versus France and still qualify - as long as Hungary fail to beat Germany. A win for either side and a three goal loss versus France could, as it stands, knock Portugal out.
22:15 - 21st June 2021 - Another look at the 3rd place rankings after a great day for Portugal
21:54 - 21st June 2021 - FULL TIME: Belgium 2-0 Finland; Denmark 4-1 Russia
That’s that! A perfect evening for Portugal with Finland falling to defeat against Belgium. Portugal now know that even if they lose by 2 goals against France on the final day, they will qualify for the round of 16 - as long as Hungary also fail to beat Germany!

Makes no difference to the 3rd place ranking table. Russia will finish bottom of the group though.

Denmark extend their lead - but it doesn’t matter, as Belgium extend their lead over Finland - even better news for Portugal

That’s good news for Portugal - Russia close Denmark’s advantage, which sees them drop in the 3rd place rankings:

It would have been a big goal for Belgium - an even bigger goal for Portugal - but it’s disallowed for offside.

This is perhaps the most complicated group of them all, with all 4 sides still with the chance of finishing 3rd in this group - but here is how the 3rd place rankings looks as the games get underway!
19:40 - A Finland loss is ideal for Portugal
Attention switches to Group B then - which is very complicated. Russia, Finland and Denmark could all still finish 3rd in the group - in actual fact, there is a very specific scenario that would see Belgium finish 3rd in the group too! But all Portuguese football fans need to know is that a Finland loss today is good news for Portugal. Any defeat for Finland would mean that Portugal will definitely progress to the round of 16 of Euro 2020 as long as they don’t lose by 3 or more goals versus France - and Hungary fail to beat Germany.
18:56 - 21st June 2021 - FULL TIME: Ukraine 0-1 Austria
It’s disappointment for Ukraine, who only needed a point to qualify - but it’s a great result for Portugal, whose chances of qualifying for the round of 16 - even with defeat against France on the final day - are given a major boost.

So far so good for Portugal - Austria have the lead against Ukraine, which makes it far more likely that 3 points could be enough for Portugal to advance to the round of 16.

And there it is! Austria have broken the deadlock through Baumgartner! Big goal for Portugal! Ukraine slip to 3rd in their group! And here is how the 3rd place rankings currently look:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s still 0-0 in this one, with a draw a good results for both sides - one that will likely see both breeze into the round of 16. Though in all fairness to both sides, this has actually proven to be an open, end to end match so far - there could well be a winner in this one still!

Ukraine and Austria are underway! Here is how the 3rd place ranking looks with the score currently 0-0:

Welcome back! Onto Day 2 of the third gameweek of the Euro 2020 group stage, and it is Austria vs Ukraine that is of particular interest to Portuguese football fans this afternoon. If there is a winner in this match, Portugal’s chances of progressing to the next round will be given a real helping hand.
21:30 - 20th June 2021 - Portugal GUARANTEED progression to round of 16 with a draw versus France
Switzerland's failure to win by at least 3 goals versus Turkey ensures that Portugal will be guaranteed a place in the round of 16 with a draw versus France. That is because Switzerland only have a goal difference of -1, while the team that progresses from Group C are also unable to better Portugal’s goal difference of +1, with Ukraine and Austria playing against one another. If there's a winner in that match, 3rd place in Group C will only accumulate 3 points. If it’s a draw, the goal difference of the 3rd place team will be 0, worse than Portugal’s goal difference. So a draw against France is all that Portugal need.

Switzerland get the job done and overtake Portugal in the rankings of the best 3rd-placed sides at Euro 2020.

Switzerland have their two goal advantage yet again and cement their place as the current best 3rd-place team of the group stage.

That makes things interesting! Switzerland’s lead cut to just 2-1. If Turkey manage to find an equaliser, it’s great news for Portugal!

We are heading into the final round of group stage fixtures, and Portugal are in a rather precarious position, sitting in 3rd place with just 3 points and a final group stage match with reigning world champions France the only game left to play. Gulp. It’s a little bit problematic to say the least, and it’s about the time faithful fans start frantically calculating whether 3 points and 3rd place will actually be good enough to qualify.
