Three Benfica academy products to be heavily involved in the senior team next season

With the departure of João Felix and Eduardo Salvio, three more players from the youth team are expected to be promoted to the senior squad for the next campaign.

One of the trio was already on the fringes of the first team last season, although ultimately didn’t get much game time - João Filipe.

Having only featured in 4 league games last campaign - 28 minutes in total - Filipe is very much in manager Bruno Lage’s plans for next campaign.

However, Filipe, now 20, has yet to commit his future with the club, having still not signed a new contract with Benfica.

Currently, Felix has a release clause of just 30 million euros - and Benfica are very keen to increase that before he gets snapped up by another club.

However, Filipe has yet to agree to a new deal, leaving open the prospect that Filipe leaves for far less than Benfica would care for.

Another Benfica academy player set to be more involved in first-team proceedings is David Tavares.

Tavares was supposed to get a chance with the senior team at the start of the last campaign while Rui Vitoria was in charge, although he ultimately suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament injury before he had the chance, hence why he missed the vast majority of the previous season.

Big things are expected from Tavares, who impressed Jurgen Klopp in a preparation match played against Liverpool just before the Champions League final.

Operating in that advanced midfield role, the 20-year old possesses good movement and dribbling, while he’s also proven to be a very composed player with terrific link-up play.

The third player of note is Nuno Tavares, the 19-year old left-back expected to be promoted to Benfica’s senior game. He will be given a chance to show his capabilities in pre-season.
